One of the world's foremost archaeological museums, founded in 1777 by Ferdinand IV and opened in 1816 as the Real Museo Borbonico in the Palazzo degli Studi, remodelled from a university building by architect Ferdinando Fuga. It unites the Farnese collection of ancient sculpture, including the Farnese Bull, with finds from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae, an Egyptian collection, and mosaics, frescoes and a numismatic collection of more than 150,000 coins.
