Fortress built between 1233 and 1249 on the orders of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, with a near-square plan and four corner towers modeled on Crusader and Roman castra design. Used as a royal residence and treasury under the Angevins, reinforced for artillery warfare under Charles V, and later a prison from 1844 to 1974, it now houses a small museum of finds recovered during its restoration.
