Site of the Battle of Cannae (216 BC), where Hannibal's Carthaginian army inflicted one of Rome's heaviest defeats of the Second Punic War. The hilltop settlement of Canne was occupied from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages, and its remains include the San Mercurio baths and a medieval citadel. The Antiquarium, inaugurated in 1958 by future prime minister Aldo Moro, displays prehistoric, Daunian, Roman and medieval finds from the site.
