Castle built in 1132 for the Norman king Roger II on an earlier fortified site, destroyed in 1156 and rebuilt after 1233 by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Enlarged under Angevin and Aragonese rule, with the outer defensive wall added by Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Bari, it now houses a museum of medieval finds from the castle excavations, a collection of plaster casts of regional monuments, and multimedia displays on the city's history.
