Archaeological park in Cassano all'Ionio preserving the successive cities on the site: Sybaris, the wealthy Achaean colony founded around 720 BC and destroyed by Croton in 510 BC; Thurii, refounded in 444 BC on a grid plan by the urban planner Hippodamus; and the Roman colony of Copia, established in 194 BC. Systematic excavation began in 1932 and intensified after 1969, uncovering the layered remains of all three settlements.
