Archaeological park at Policoro on the site of Heraclea, founded around 434 BC by colonists from Taras and Thurii on the earlier settlement of Siris. It became capital of the Italiote League by 374 BC and, in 280 BC, was the site of the battle where Pyrrhus first deployed war elephants against a Roman army; the acropolis preserves temples and a grid of paved streets, with finds displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Siritide.
