Coastal promontory in the Capo Rizzuto marine reserve where a Greek defensive wall of the late 4th–early 3rd century BC, possibly linked to ancient Croton, underlies the later fortress. Romans settled colonists here after Hannibal's withdrawal, and the Aragonese castle that gives the site its name took its present form after the fortress was seized by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1444 and rebuilt under Alfonso II by 1487.
