Etruscan necropolis of the ancient city of Caere, northwest of Cerveteri, in use from the 9th to the 2nd century BC and covering some 20 hectares, one of the largest burial grounds of the ancient Mediterranean. Tombs range from Villanovan pit and trench graves to large circular tumuli cut into the tufa and, later, cube-shaped 'dado' tombs lining street grids that mimic the layout of a town, among them the Tomb of the Reliefs with its painted stucco furnishings. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004, together with the Monterozzi necropolis at Tarquinia.
