Roman bath complex north of Civitavecchia, begun in the Sullan era of the early 1st century BCE and greatly enlarged under Trajan and again under Hadrian, remaining in use until the late 5th century CE. Its name, recorded by the poet Rutilius Namatianus in 416 CE, derives from a legend in which a bull scraped the earth to reveal the hot sulphurous springs feeding the baths.
