Remains of Portus, the artificial harbour Rome built on the coast north of Ostia to receive grain and goods shipped from across the empire. Claudius began the outer harbour around AD 46, its two long moles and lighthouse completed and inaugurated by Nero in AD 54; Trajan then added an inner hexagonal basin, designed by Apollodorus of Damascus and finished around AD 112, whose 32-hectare outline is still clearly traceable on the ground and from the air. A canal, the Fossa Traiana, connected the port complex to the Tiber and to Ostia.
