Remains of Grumentum, a Roman city founded in the 3rd century BC in Lucania as a military outpost during the Samnite Wars. It was the site of two battles of the Second Punic War (215 and 207 BC), in which Hannibal, encamped near the walls, was eventually defeated by Gaius Claudius Nero. Visible ruins include an Augustan-era theatre, a 1st-century-BC amphitheatre, the forum, thermal baths and an aqueduct, excavated systematically from the 1950s under Pellegrino Claudio Sestieri.
