Extensive archaeological area preserving Rome's ancient harbour city, founded according to tradition in the 7th century BCE at the mouth of the Tiber and grown into a major port and trading hub under the Empire. Its ruins, abandoned after the river silted up and the coastline receded, include the forum, theatre, warehouses, baths and multi-storey apartment blocks that make it one of the best-preserved Roman towns.
