Prehistoric sanctuary near Sassari centred on a monumental stepped altar shaped like a truncated pyramid, built with a 42-metre ramp during the early Copper Age, around 3500-2900 BCE. Excavations directed by Ercole Contu from the 1950s and later by Santo Tiné revealed beneath it an earlier structure known as the Red Temple, dated to the Ozieri culture of the late Neolithic; the monument has no known parallel in prehistoric Europe and is often compared to Mesopotamian ziggurats.
