Vast public baths in Rome, inaugurated in 216 CE under the emperor Caracalla and remaining in use until the Ostrogothic siege severed the city's aqueducts in the 6th century. Covering some 25 hectares, the complex could accommodate over a thousand bathers at once and its towering brick ruins, once lined with marble, mosaics and statuary, illustrate the scale of Roman imperial architecture.
