The Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum, built between 70 and 80 AD under the emperors Vespasian and Titus. The largest amphitheatre ever constructed, it could hold tens of thousands of spectators for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, and remains the defining monument of ancient Rome.
