Monumental white marble complex in the centre of Rome, built to honour King Victor Emmanuel II, first king of a unified Italy, to a design by architect Giuseppe Sacconi selected in an international competition and inaugurated in 1911. It incorporates the Altare della Patria and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, added after the First World War, and now also hosts museum exhibitions and a panoramic terrace.
