Medieval castle in Ghent built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace on the site of earlier 9th- and 10th-century fortifications, serving as residence of the Counts of Flanders until the 14th century and later as a prison and, from the late 18th century, a cotton mill. Saved from demolition and restored after the city of Ghent purchased it in 1885, it now displays period weapons, armour and a torture chamber.
