Museum in Ghent opened in 1986 in the buildings of a former psychiatric hospital founded by Dr Joseph Guislain (1797-1860), a pioneer of humane treatment for the mentally ill in Belgium. It explores the history of psychiatry alongside art brut and contemporary works by artists who have experienced mental illness.
