Benedictine abbey founded in 910 by Duke William I of Aquitaine, cradle of the Cluniac order, which grew to include some one thousand monasteries across Europe. Its Cluny III abbey church, begun in 1088, was the largest church in Christendom until St Peter's in Rome was rebuilt; sold as national property and largely demolished after 1798, only the Eau Bénite bell tower and south transept survive.
