A Romanesque cathedral of the 11th–13th centuries built of polychrome volcanic stone on a Byzantine-inspired plan, the historic starting point of the Via Podiensis pilgrim route to Compostela and a place of pilgrimage to its Black Virgin since the Middle Ages. The complex includes a 12th-century Romanesque cloister with carved capitals and a freestanding 56-metre bell tower; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998.
