Successor to the museum founded in 1804 by Wlgrin de Taillefer, it occupies the former Augustinian convent of Périgueux, rebuilt from 1895 to 1898 by the architect Charles Planckaert and opened in 1903. Its collections include one of France's richest prehistoric holdings, Gallo-Roman mosaics from Vesunna, and African and Oceanic art.
