The Centre des monuments nationaux manages seven of the sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979 in the Vézère valley: the decorated caves of Font-de-Gaume and Les Combarelles, the carved Abri du Poisson, the sculpted animal frieze at Cap Blanc, and the Mousterian deposits of Le Moustier, La Micoque and La Ferrassie. Together they document human occupation from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic, from Mousterian to Magdalenian times.
