Founded in 1918 by the prehistorian Denis Peyrony in the former Château de Tayac, set against the Les Eyzies cliff, and opened in 1923. Enlarged in 2004 by the architect Jean-Pierre Buffi, it holds nearly six million objects, one of the most important Palaeolithic collections in the world.
