Founded on 16 February 1798 by the drawing teacher Louis-Joseph Jay, it became, thanks to one of its curators between the wars, the first museum of modern art in France. Housed since 1994 on place de Lavalette, it spreads across fifty-seven rooms collections ranging from ancient Egypt to contemporary art, including Matisse's Interior with Aubergines.
