Founded in 1906 by Hippolyte Müller, it was one of the very first regional heritage museums in France. It occupies the former 17th-century Visitandine convent of Sainte-Marie-d'en-Haut, clinging to the lower slopes of the Bastille, and devotes its exhibitions to the history and Alpine cultures of the Dauphiné.
