Founded in 1801 and opened in 1809, the museum was entirely destroyed in the bombing of 1944 and reopened in 1970 within the grounds of Caen's ducal castle. It is renowned for its Italian, Flemish and French paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries and for the print collection assembled by Bernard Mancel.
