Founded in 1802 following the Chaptal decree, the museum has occupied a wing of the Palais Longchamp, a building opened in 1869 to designs by the architect Henry Espérandieu, since 1873. It holds paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 16th to the 19th century, including a major group of sculptures by Pierre Puget.
