Founded in 1920 by the Nîmes scholar Henry Bauquier, the museum occupies the former episcopal palace of the late 17th century, on Place aux Herbes near the cathedral. Its collections of regional ethnography evoke life in Nîmes since the Middle Ages and the textile industry, including the famous serge de Nîmes, the ancestor of denim.
