The museum occupies a villa inspired by the Italian Renaissance, begun in 1878 for Princess Elizabeth Kochubey and completed for the Thompson family. Acquired by the city in 1925, it opened as a museum in 1928 and houses collections built up through successive donations, including a substantial group of works by Jules Chéret.
