Founded in 1866 by Francisque Mandet, the museum occupies the Hôtel Dufraisse du Cheix, a Louis XV-style mansion built in Volvic stone from 1707 onward. Fine art, Mediterranean archaeology and decorative arts sit alongside the 5,500 works given in 1983 by Monsieur and Madame Richard.
