The oldest municipal museum in Nice, opened in 1846 around the collections of the naturalist Jean-Baptiste Vérany, joined as early as 1863 by those of Jean-Baptiste Barla, who bequeathed his buildings and holdings to the city in 1896. It holds more than a million specimens, mostly Mediterranean in origin.
