Fortress town designed by Vauban and built from 1693 on a rocky spur 1,050 metres high, at the confluence of the Guil and Durance valleys, to protect the kingdom from incursions by the Duke of Savoy. Its pink marble ramparts, barracks, sentry turrets, arsenal and powder magazine were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008 as part of the Fortifications of Vauban; about 170 people still live in the village.
