Cistercian abbey in Priverno, granted in 1134 to Burgundian monks following the reform of Bernard of Clairvaux and built between the 1160s and 1208, when Pope Innocent III consecrated its altar. Its travertine church, with rose window and octagonal lantern tower, is considered the earliest example of Gothic architecture in Italy; Thomas Aquinas died in a cell of the abbey in 1274.
