Italo-Byzantine Greek Catholic monastery in Grottaferrata, founded in 1004 by the Calabrian monk Nilus of Rossano and consecrated in 1024 by Pope John XIX; it is the last surviving Byzantine-rite Basilian monastery in Italy still in communion with Rome. The Romanesque abbey church, fronted by a 12th-13th-century mosaic of the Deesis, encloses a chapel crypt of the 5th-6th century and stands within fortifications begun under Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, and its library holds hundreds of Greek and Latin manuscripts alongside a noted book-restoration workshop.
