Roman amphitheatre in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, ancient Capua, built around 100 CE (construction date debated among scholars), restored under Hadrian in 119 and inaugurated by Antoninus Pius in 155. With an estimated capacity of around 60,000 and a four-storey elliptical facade rising 46 metres, it is the second-largest surviving Roman amphitheatre after the Colosseum, which it is thought to have influenced; it was also home to a renowned gladiator school, and in 2024 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for ancient Capua.
