Vast royal palace built from 1752 for Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples, to designs by architect Luigi Vanvitelli, intended to rival Versailles as the seat of the new Bourbon capital. Its 1,200 rooms and monumental staircase surround a park with cascading fountains and an English garden, and the complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
