The oldest church in Cagliari and dedicated to the city's patron saint, built from the 5th century over the burial site of the martyr Saturninus and first recorded between 507 and 523, when Fulgentius of Ruspe founded a monastery beside it. Originally a Greek-cross domed building blending Byzantine and early Christian forms, it was rebuilt in Provençal Romanesque style by Benedictine monks after 1089 and reconsecrated in 1119; only the central domed bay and the three-aisled east arm survive today, following restoration after World War II bombing damage.
