The most important archaeological museum in Sardinia, founded in 1800 as a cabinet of archaeology and natural history under Viceroy Carlo Felice and opened to the public in 1802. Since 1993 it has occupied the Cittadella dei Musei, designed by architects Piero Gazzola and Libero Cecchini, displaying Sardinian finds from prehistory to the Byzantine period across four floors.
