A castle in San Giustino, in Umbria's upper Tiber valley, built from 1487 for Niccolò Bufalini as a square fortress with four watchtowers, designed by the Roman architect Mariano Savelli. From 1530 Giulio I Bufalini had it converted into an elegant residence with loggias by the Florentine architect Nanni Unghero, and the Bufalini brothers commissioned the Mannerist painter Cristofano Gherardi to fresco rooms including the Sala del Trono; an Italian garden was added in the late 17th century, and the state acquired the castle in 1988.
