National archaeological museum and adjoining park opened in 2007, built on systematic excavations begun in 1962 by archaeologist Bruno D'Agostino at the Villanovan-then-Etruscan settlement of Pontecagnano. Its exhibition, 'Gli Etruschi di frontiera' (Etruscans of the Frontier), draws on some 9,000 excavated tombs to trace Etruscan expansion into southern Italy from around 3000 to the 3rd century BC.
