National archaeological museum opened in 1985 within the former Benedictine monastery of Sant'Agata, founded in 1396 over the 11th-century Palazzo Corvi, itself built above the remains of Spoleto's Roman theatre. Excavation of the theatre began in 1933 and resumed in 1954 after wartime interruption, and the museum's collection spans the 4th millennium BC to the 4th century AD.
