Hilltop fortress overlooking Spoleto, built from 1359 on the orders of Cardinal Egidio Albornoz to designs by Matteo di Giovannello, known as Gattapone, as part of a network of strongholds restoring papal authority over central Italy. Used from 1816 as a prison, it now houses the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, opened in 2007, which traces the history of the Lombard duchy from the 4th to the 15th century.
