Napoleon's country residence on Elba, built below Portoferraio and occupied during his exile from May 1814 to February 1815, while the nearby Palazzina dei Mulini handled his official duties. In 1851 Prince Anatoly Demidoff, who had married Napoleon's niece Mathilde Bonaparte, added the neoclassical Demidoff Gallery designed by Niccolò Matas and inaugurated in 1859, now displaying Napoleonic memorabilia, paintings and sculpture, including a Galatea attributed to Canova.
