Remains of Casinum, a Volscian and later Samnite settlement absorbed by Rome in the 3rd century BC, near modern Cassino at the foot of Montecassino abbey; visible remains include megalithic walls, a Roman theatre, an amphitheatre for roughly 4,000 spectators, and the funerary monument of Ummidia Quadratilla. The adjoining museum, opened in 1979 and named in 2003 after archaeologist Gianfilippo Carettoni, displays prehistoric, Roman and funerary finds from the area, including a late-Republican marble statue and a decorated bone funerary bed from Aquinum.
