Roman town buried, along with Pompeii, under volcanic material during the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius; unlike Pompeii's ash and pumice, Herculaneum's deposits of hot mud and pyroclastic flow hardened around timber, furniture and food, preserving organic remains in exceptional condition. Discovered by chance in 1709 and excavated systematically from 1738, notably under Amedeo Maiuri from 1927, the site includes richly decorated houses, public baths, and the Villa of the Papyri with its carbonized library of scrolls. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, together with Pompeii and Oplontis.
