The ruins of the Roman town of Pompeii, buried under ash and pumice by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE and rediscovered through excavations beginning in the 18th century. Its streets, houses, forum, theatres and amphitheatre, remarkably preserved by the volcanic deposits, offer the most complete surviving picture of daily life in a Roman city and were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
