Roman suburban site at Torre Annunziata, buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Its centrepiece is the Villa of Poppaea, a luxurious 1st-century-BC residence later enlarged, decorated with mythological frescoes of Hercules and Apollo and traditionally linked to Poppaea Sabina, wife of Nero, on the basis of a painted inscription found on an amphora. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, together with Pompeii and Herculaneum.
