Savoy royal residence south of Turin with origins as an 11th-century fortified manor, later a possession of the Marquises of Saluzzo before passing to the House of Savoy in the second half of the 14th century. Remodelled from 1676 by architect Guarino Guarini and repeatedly enlarged, it served as a summer retreat for the Savoy-Carignano branch and the kings of Sardinia and Italy; the state acquired it in 1980, and it was inscribed with the other Savoy residences on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.
