Renaissance fortress built between 1476 and 1482 for Giovanni della Rovere, lord of Senigallia and nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, with the residential wing designed by Luciano Laurana and the defensive works completed by Baccio Pontelli. In 1503 it was the setting for the massacre of rival condottieri by Cesare Borgia, an episode later recounted by Niccolò Machiavelli.
