Medieval fortress built around 1150 by the De Grifo family and later held by the Malatesta, Sforza and Della Rovere lords, whose successive rebuildings shaped the castle and the walled village around it. Tradition, though undocumented, places within its walls the tragic love affair of Paolo and Francesca, killed by Francesca's husband Gianciotto Malatesta in 1289 and immortalised by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
